But all kidding aside, no matter what your political stance is, yesterday, January 20th, 2009 was a historical day. Just like people now ask you where you were on September 11th, one day people will be asking you where you were when the first African American was sworn into office.
You want to know where I was?...Honestly I was sitting on my couch, watching it on TV. While millions of Americans travelled far and wide to get here, paid thousands of dollars a night to stay here, and stood hours upon hours in the freezing cold just to catch a glimpse, this Washingtonian (who could just about throw a stone from my balcony and hit the White House) will pathetically admit that I didn't even go :)
I did however watch it all. I watched the swearing in, the speeches, the singing, the reading of poems, the playing of music... yep I watched it all. And I'll even admit it, I definitely got a little choked up during Rick Warren's prayer, maybe even shed a tear or two depending on who you ask. The truth is that as the camera zoomed in on Barack Obama's face and out onto the mall where millions upon millions of Americans stood with their heads bowed and eyes closed, it made me realize what an amazing country we live in, how far we have truly come, and how very lucky I am to live in the United States of America.
